That which has taken place does not disappear. Most processes of daily life, natural and man-made, preserve some form of matter – it might evaporate but always falls back to earth in the form of rain, for example. The same goes for human history, which piles up and lays the foundation for the future that lies ahead – but only if it has been well documented, measured and mirrored. Otherwise, nothing really happens.

Is the spirit aware of the matter? is an exploration of the rules that mankind has created for itself throughout history. The social, economic, political and cultural systems of Western society that shape and determine the reality in which we live, and are in fact also highly influenced by the natural pull that affects our senses.

The works in this exhibition reflect the artist’s efforts to analyze and make visible the undercurrent these systems are based on and human beings find so difficult to resist. The artists are not seeking answers, instead they try to identify different ways of understanding. In this way, the works become stimuli or fragments of a narrative that reveal what is accepted, and we can arrange and add to it as we wish.
